The Yellow Emperor said, "Yin and Yang are the way of Heaven and Earth, the great principle and outline of everything, the parents of change, the root and source of life and death, the palace of gods. Treatment of disease should be based upon the roots of Yin and Yang." - HUANGDI NEIJING, first century BC.
The ancient Chinese concept of Yin and Yang is the foundation of Chinese philosophy and practices such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese metaphysics. By the 4th century BC, the theories of Yin and Yang, along with the Five Elements, had taken shape.
In the beginning, Yin and Yang symbolized the shady and sunny sides of mountains. Over time, this principle evolved to represent the polar opposites of interrelated phenomena. Yin describes the structural and material qualities of the universe, while Yang embodies its functional and energetic qualities.
Yin and Yang are complementary, contradictory, and inseparable. They signify interdependence and change — reminding us that balance is not static, but a living dance of opposites.
