Aromatherapy is a wholistic treatment used to improve physical and emotional well being for centuries. Essentially, aromatherapy is an external treatment with internal effects. The use of plant resins and essences date back to 3000 BC by the Egyptians. What many users of essential oils are unaware of is that it was a Persian, Abd Allah ibn Sina commonly known as Avicenna credited with the invention of distillation technique used to extract essential oils. China (TCM) and India (Ayurveda) also have a long history of using plants and herbs for medical purposes.
It was in the 1920s when the term Aromatherapy was coined by a French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé. He discovered that lavender essential oil helps to heal burns and prevent scarring. During the First World War, René-Maurice applied lavender essential oil on the wounds of soldiers which sped up the healing process. Research into essential oils were continued by several French scientists including Dr. Jean Valnet who also used essential oils on soldiers during the Second World War, because of their antiseptic properties. In the 1940's, an Austrian biochemist, Margeurite Maury, introduced aromatherapy to Britain. It is she who developed the idea of using massage techniques to add essential oils to the skin. Aromatherapy made its debut in America in 1974 by the revered Robert Tisserand who pioneered aromatherapy as a clinical therapy. The biochemical components and composition of essential oils continue to evolve and fascinate us and, the demand for these highly volatile oils are increasing all over the world.
